Abyssal Labs: Meditation Music for Modernist Minds

Yoga, meditation, mindfulness... for many of us these practices have become essential tools for dealing with the stressful reality of adult life. But it's not always easy to find the right environment in which we can be mindful. Abyssal Labs seeks to aid meditation by addressing three key problems.

The city is a noisy place
Over half us on the planet now live in cities, environments which are by their nature overwhelmingly noisy, from the neighbours in the apartment upstairs to the school opposite, from the traffic and sirens to the 24-hour revellers. Even the most seasoned practitioners of deep concentration can find themselves distracted by the urban soundscape. This has been known for a long time of course, and an entire industry exists to supply relaxation music.

"But I'm just not that New Age!"
We don't decry this - for many the meditation music out there already plainly works. But for those of us brought up on harsher, urban music - on metal, on grime, on techno or hardcore and punk - the sounds of the rainforest or the Aeolian harp won't cut it: we need darker sounds to accompany our descents into oceanic calm. Enter Abyssal Labs.

Art vs function
We know that there is already a vast amount of beautiful "dark ambient" out there. Indeed, the team behind Abyssal Labs is grounded in that tradition; furthermore, we celebrate this music with regular new Spotify playlists. But that music has been created to communicate: it is art. Abyssal Labs, on the other hand, have created sound works specifically to accompany meditation and yoga practice. Each release can be accessed in different lengths - 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, 30 minutes (or custom lengths) - each designed with the same arc, building from gentleness through deep intensity before dying down once again into nothing: the shape of your routine. Abyssal Labs is not art: it is a tool.
